Artist Statement:

I am a sculptor and mixed media artist who works primarily with various types of clay from stoneware (ceramic) to Apoxie Sculpt (a 2 part self hardening clay). I was exposed to ceramics in my early childhood when I made and sold ceramic snakes and other animals: later I pursued undergraduate and graduate work in studio art and specifically 3d illustration. Over the course of my life I have drawn inspiration from a variety of genres that include fantasy, sci-fi, folk art, surrealism, and the animal kingdom. I begin each piece by making sketches of the concept. I think about what media I will bring together to create the piece. For mixed media works I scour flea markets, thrift stores, and garage sales to acquire interesting artifacts to incorporate in my sculptures. For other pieces I sculpt in different types of clay. After constructing the works one of my favorite things is using a variety of tools, painting and glazing techniques to create elaborate details and interesting surface textures. Many of my sculptures have an illustrative element, as I enjoy telling a story, however it's most fun when a collector suggests their own narrative.

Artist Bio:

Kristin Morris was born in Springfield, Ohio. She started working with clay during her early childhood. This interest persisted: she majored in studio art at The College Of Wooster and later studied illustration at The Columbus College of Art & Design. Morris was awarded a master's degree in social work from The Ohio State University and subsequently has taught art in multiple settings to both children and adults, some with developmental disabilities. Throughout her career Morris has held jobs sculpting and/or painting for natural history museums, haunted houses, a waterpark ride, and a costume shop. Morris invents characters and then uses clay to bring them into the physical world. Her sculptures have been described as whimsical, yet often "creepy" or otherworldly. Her work has been featured in publications including "Art Doll Quarterly" magazine and "The Columbus Dispatch." It was featured on the television show "Broad and High" in 2019. Morris had solo shows at the Columbus Cultural Arts Center and Southeast Healthcare's "Fresh A.I.R." Gallery." She continues to show in group shows, galleries, and art fairs throughout Ohio.
