Artist Statement:

I have long been drawn to contemplative practices such as yoga, meditation and mindfulness in attempting to understand myself, and the vastness of nature. Years of intense Buddhist meditation brought me deep personal insight and peace. At the same time, I became keenly aware of my tendency to retreat into the beauty and comfort of a well-developed imagination versus facing fear and uncertainty with courage. The layers of protection I create in the mind are fragile binds against the urgent call of the world for fierce action against the oppressive forces that threaten free expression and human thriving. These figurative paintings explore how fantasy and perception of safety built through contemplative practice can simultaneously heal and foster escapism from the gritty responsibilities of daily life.
